Sometimes we can all agree: the right person won. Rory McIlroy was the year’s stand-out sporting achiever and it was only right he should, as 2025 draws to a close, receive the honour as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Not least because - as he proved with his steadfast refusal to be intimidated by drunken US golf bros at the Ryder Cup earlier this year - this is a sportsman with proper personality.
