Rory McIlroy Has a Bad Finish for a Rough Start at the PGA Championship
On Thursday, Rory McIlroy described his opening round as "s--t" after carding a 4-over 74 at the PGA Championship held at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
Struggling with driving accuracy, McIlroy hit just five of 14 fairways and finished with five bogeys over his final six holes, unraveling what had been a controlled round.
Despite hitting 12 of 18 greens, McIlroy took 34 putts and missed three from the 7-foot range, though he flatly dismissed concerns that a blister on his little toe was a factor.
Sitting four shots behind early leaders Min Woo Lee and Stephan Jaeger, McIlroy must post a strong second round on Friday to avoid missing the 70-player cut.
McIlroy faces steep historical odds pursuing the second leg of a calendar Grand Slam, as no player has won the PGA Championship after an opening-round 74 since Payne Stewart in 1989.
