Rome to charge visitors for access to Trevi Fountain

  • On Friday, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri announced a €2 ticket for nonresidents to step onto the Trevi Fountain starting February 1, while views from the piazza remain free.
  • Officials point to heavy footfall, noting 9 million visitors this year, averaging 30,000 a day and some days up to 70,000, after a yearlong experiment with staggered entry and a 400-person cap at a time.
  • City hall estimates the scheme will raise 6.5 million euros a year, and five other sites will charge five euros while registered Rome residents retain free access.
  • Gualtieri argued `Two euros isn't very much... and it will lead to less chaotic tourist flows`, with the fee applying 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and free after nightfall, while Yvonne Salustri said, `If it means that money is used to keep it maintained, then yeah, that's fine`.
  • This change follows similar moves such as the Pantheon fee in 2023 and Venice's charge last year, while the coin-toss tradition still raises thousands weekly for the Caritas charity.
