Romania, Poland Take Different Tacks on Buying New Combat Vehicles
ROMANIA, JUL 21 – Romania will acquire six advanced Israeli short- and very short-range air defense systems to enhance protection against drones and missiles amid regional instability, officials said.
- On Monday, Romania signed a framework agreement to buy Shorad-Vshorad systems, valued at over €2 billion with six systems through three further contracts.
- Since Russia's 2022 invasion, Romania, along its 650-kilometer Ukraine border, has had Russian drone fragments regularly falling on its soil.
- Built to intercept low-altitude threats, the deal includes training, ammunition and logistical support, and Romanian defense officials said it integrates into NATO frameworks.
- The Romanian Ministry of Defense said the deal strengthens national airspace protection and counters eastern flank threats, marking a significant upgrade amid regional instability.
- Under the seven-year framework, the first two systems arrive within three years, complementing Romania's earlier $6.5 billion F-35 purchase, Romanian Ministry of Defense said.

Romania will buy six short- and very short-range air defense systems from Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for more than two billion euros (over 49.2 billion crowns). This is part of a framework agreement between Bucharest and the company, which is known for its Iron Dome air defense system. The seven-year contract commits Romania to further future purchases.
