Romania scrambles fighter jets after drone breach during Russian strike on Ukraine

Romania deployed four fighter jets to monitor and protect its airspace after a Russian drone penetrated 5 miles during strikes on Ukrainian border infrastructure, the defense ministry said.

  • On Wednesday, Romania's Defence Ministry said radar picked up a drone 8km inside its airspace near Periprava and Chilia Veche, prompting fighter jets to scramble.
  • Ukraine's air force reported Russia launched 476 drones and 48 missiles overnight, focusing on Lviv, Ternopil and Kharkiv regions in the largest November assault since Oct. 30.
  • Romania deployed two German Eurofighters and later two Romanian-operated F-16 fighter jets, warning residents in Tulcea County and Galati County to take cover, Romania's Defence Ministry said no drones hit the ground.
  • NATO fighter jets were scrambled and ground-based air-defence systems put on highest alert in Poland and Romania, while Poland temporarily closed Rzeszow and Lublin airports, Poland's Operational Command said.
  • Romania, an EU and NATO member, shares a border with Ukraine and has repeatedly seen Russian drone fragments fall on its territory as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tours Europe seeking air-defence missiles.
