Apps including weather, Google Maps and WhatsApp now available on Rogers Satellite
Rogers Satellite expands connectivity in hard-to-reach Canadian regions, supporting voice, video, and IoT with over one million texts sent during beta, company said.
- On Dec. 09, 2025, Rogers Communications Inc. announced the commercial launch of Rogers Satellite in Toronto, expanding from text to support voice and video calling apps coast-to-coast in Canada.
- Rogers built on a July beta text service with text-to-911 and a September trial, pairing SpaceX's Starlink with Rogers' national wireless spectrum to bridge coverage gaps over 18 per cent of Canada.
- Rogers said popular apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather, X and CalTopo now function over satellite, with usage deducted from existing data buckets and support for IoT and 911 voice services.
- Tony Staffieri hailed the launch as `a game changer for our industry`, highlighting strong beta trial participation with over one million satellite texts and benefits for Canadian businesses and governmental organizations in remote regions.
- The company said it plans to expand Rogers Satellite next year to support broader data and voice services, and developers will update apps to work over satellite.
