Coinbase, Robinhood Down as Amazon Outage Briefly Cripples the Internet

A network issue at AWS's northern Virginia data center caused outages affecting thousands of users on Robinhood and Coinbase, with partial recovery underway, officials said.

  • On Oct. 20, Robinhood, online brokerage, and Coinbase, cryptocurrency exchange, experienced service disruptions after Amazon Web Services reported outages at its Northern Virginia data center, with Downdetector showing over 8,000 users affected around 11 a.m. ET.
  • AWS said late Monday it is investigating the root cause of a network connectivity issue after the outage began around 3 a.m. ET in the US-EAST-1 region, attributing it to a DNS problem.
  • Coinbase confirmed some older asset transfer requests remain pending, Robinhood said on X that services were impacted due to AWS issues and it was working to resolve them.
  • Despite the outage, stocks for Amazon, Coinbase and Robinhood were higher Monday morning, with Amazon up 1, Coinbase almost 5%, and Robinhood more than 6%, as AWS reported early signs of recovery by 6:35 a.m. ET.
  • The interruption renews focus on decentralized alternatives as crypto developers aim to build a decentralized internet to avoid reliance on a single provider, following an April AWS malfunction that briefly crippled Binance and Kucoin.
