B.C. NDP Meeting to Select New Interim Leader This Week
The party will choose from three senior MLAs as it tries to steady a caucus that lost 19 seats and fell to opposition.
The BC New Democrats meet this week to select an interim leader to replace David Eby, who resigned Saturday after the party lost 19 seats in the recent election.
Eby accepted responsibility for calling a snap election with two years left in his majority government's mandate, which saw the BC Conservatives surge to a 63-seat supermajority.
Party members are floating names including Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma, former party leader Adrian Dix, and Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth to fill the interim role, though the appointee cannot run for permanent leadership.
Incoming opposition members face a difficult transition, as Mario Canseco of Research Co. noted the position is not a "compelling or attractive proposition" for party leadership.
University of British Columbia political science lecturer Stewart Prest expects a "broad and thorough" leadership race, urging the party to reflect on its story and highlight successes including major infrastructure projects to rebuild.
