Rivian developing variants of its more affordable R2 EVs
Rivian said design changes and higher volumes cut R2 production costs by more than 50%, helping it target a more affordable mass-market EV.
On Tuesday, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe announced the company is developing undisclosed R2 variants, stating, "There are other variants of R2, which we haven't shown," referencing production expansion at a new Georgia plant.
Rivian reduced R2 production costs by more than 50% compared to the R1 by simplifying mechanical setups; large die castings cut underbody part counts by 90%, while the new Maximus Drive unit uses 41% fewer parts.
A keenly awaited $45,000 R2 trim with over 275 miles of range arrives by late 2027, while the rollout begins with a $58,000 performance version positioned as more approachable than premium R1S and R1T vehicles.
Uber will deploy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2028 as part of a $1.25 billion robotaxi deal central to Rivian's fleet strategy and autonomous vehicle expansion.
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard projects a 53% jump in R2 deliveries this year, while CEO Scaringe hinted at future variants, saying, "So clearly there could be an R2X.
