Two or three nights a week, the smell descends on the villages. Residents of the settlements on the outskirts of Istanbul have been tormented by it for years. It is so strong that even on hot summer nights they are forced to sleep with the windows closed.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that some landfills in Turkey are among the highest methane emitting waste facilities worldwide. According to the report, based on satellite data, the landfill in Silivri, Istanbul, releases an average of 7.4 tons of methane per hour into the atmosphere, while the facility in Şile releases approximately 4 tons.
