In this Comment, I condense principles from design, visual perception and data visualization research in a checklist that can help researchers to improve their data visualization, by focusing on clarity, accessibility and design best practices.

Every year, more than one million scientific articles are published in the life sciences. Two-thirds of them include statistical figures that are not always understandable, interpretable, or reproducible—even for fellow scientists.
