Researchers discover attempt to infect leading Egyptian opposition politician with Predator spyware
- Ahmed Altantawy, a leading Egyptian opposition politician, was targeted with spyware after announcing his presidential bid. Security researchers discovered that his devices were infected with the Predator spyware through the Vodaphone Egypt mobile network, enabling remote eavesdropping and data theft.
- Altantawy's phone was previously hacked with the Predator spyware in 2021, and Citizen Lab has identified Egypt as a customer of Predator's maker, Cytrox. The spyware has also affected exiled Egyptians and other countries including Greece and Saudi Arabia.
- Altantawy believes that the hacking attempts are connected to his political candidacy and opposition role against the Sisi regime. He suspects that the spyware's purpose is not only surveillance but also to gather compromising material for potential discredit or defamation.
