Republic of Ireland: Counting continues in by-elections
On Saturday, Social Democrat candidate Daniel Ennis led Dublin Central's tally with 19.6% of first preferences, while Independent Ireland's Noel Thomas and Fine Gael's Seán Kyne remained neck-and-neck in Galway West at 20.2% and 19.9% respectively.
Voters went to the polls on Friday to fill seats vacated by former minister Paschal Donohoe, who left political life to join the World Bank, and President Catherine Connolly.
Social Democrats TD for the constituency Gary Gannon said the result was "a real endorsement of the type of politics Social Democrats stand for." Gannon added the party was "obviously delighted" with the tally.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said the party is "disappointed with the result" in Galway West and added she "feels no pressure" over her leadership as counting continues.
Ireland's complex proportional representation system with single transferable vote requires multiple counts, with officials expecting final winners declared by Saturday evening for Dublin Central and Sunday for Galway West.
