Report: Out-of-form Gio Reyna makes U.S. World Cup roster
The Athletic reported Reyna was selected despite limited club minutes and injuries, while Diego Luna and Zavier Gozo were left off the squad.
On Friday, The Athletic reported that midfielder Gio Reyna secured a spot on manager Mauricio Pochettino's 26-man U.S. World Cup roster despite limited playing time at Borussia Mönchengladbach this season.
Pochettino maintained faith in the 23-year-old, previously calling him a "very special talent," though Reyna's selection remains debated given his injury history and 509 minutes played for his German club.
Joining Reyna on the squad are winger Brenden Aaronson, midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, goalkeeper Matt Turner, and center back Mark McKenzie, confirmed in The Athletic's preliminary roster report.
Despite featuring prominently in World Cup promotional campaigns, Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna was surprisingly omitted, as was his teammate Zavier Gozo despite strong league performances.
U.S. Soccer will officially unveil the 26-man roster on Tuesday in New York City, as the team prepares to open its World Cup campaign against Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
