Report: "Final straw" for Steelers was Joey Porter Jr.'s Wednesday claim of back pain
The team viewed his Wednesday back-pain claim as the final straw after two full practices, and a trade now appears likely, Gerry Dulac said.
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday after Porter claimed back pain on Wednesday, ending a contract standoff the team believed he would eventually concede.
Contract talks between Porter and Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan stalled while the Steelers negotiated deals with 2023 draft classmates Nick Herbig, Darnell Washington and Keeanu Benton, as the team maintained a longstanding no-negotiation policy once the season started.
Porter, who did not allow a touchdown pass in 2024 or 2025, stated 'I feel like I was an elite guy since I've been in this league,' while the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots rewarded cornerbacks with new contracts despite Pittsburgh declining.
Hours after the trade, Pittsburgh's secondary faltered in a 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, with DeShaun Watson passing for 268 yards as the Steelers dropped to 2-2.
Without Porter, the Steelers must now contain Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and DeShaun Watson in the AFC North while facing potential playoff opponents Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, with defensive captain Cam Heyward noting poor tackling as Pittsburgh prepares to host Indianapolis on October 11.
