New All Blacks Boss Rennie Lifts Title in Final Japan Game
Rennie’s Kobe side won 22-13 and he will soon name his first All Blacks squad, with just over a year to prepare for the World Cup.
On Sunday, incoming New Zealand head coach Dave Rennie led the Kobe Steelers to the Japan Rugby League One title, defeating the Kubota Spears 22-13 in front of more than 50,000 spectators at Tokyo's National Stadium.
The 62-year-old Rennie previously won back-to-back Super Rugby titles with the Waikato Chiefs in 2012 and 2013, becoming the third former Australian boss to win in Tokyo alongside Eddie Jones and Robbie Deans.
Australian fly-half Bernard Foley's Kubota Spears built an early lead, but Kobe responded with two penalties by Japan fly-half Seungsin Lee to tie the match 13-13 at half-time before pulling away.
Foley departs after seven seasons in Japan, while Kobe teammates and New Zealand internationals Ardie Savea and Anton Lienert-Brown return home to join Rennie's All Blacks coaching transition.
Rennie will announce his first All Blacks squad on June 22 for Nations Championship Tests against France, Italy, and Ireland, leaving just over a year to prepare for the World Cup in Australia.
