HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) - Marine Corps Sgt. Harold Hammett, 24, who was killed in World War II, has been accounted for. Born in February 1919 in Avery, Mississippi, Hammett was the fifth of eight children. He graduated from East Forrest Consolidated High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in San Francisco in August 1940. He was sent to the South Pacific in July 1942.
