In the hilly area of Goya, Nishihara Town, near Nishihara Sports Park, the remains of dozens of people believed to be casualties of the Battle of Okinawa have been discovered. Among them are skulls still wearing helmets and numerous hand grenades. Kurata Uyama, executive director of the NPO "Kūentai" which collected the remains, speculates that "it was likely a fierce close-quarters battle where grenades were being thrown at each other."
