Kidnapped aged 85 from southern Israel's Kibbutz Nir Oz, Zalmanovich was known as a learned man in Israel's geography and history, and had specialized in growing wheat in extreme heat. Thirteen hostages remain in Gaza

Kibbutz residents and friends came to pay their last respects to Zalmanovich. His body was returned from Hamas captivity on Tuesday night. He was kidnapped on October 7 from his home while still alive and murdered by the terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. He left behind 2 sons and 5 grandchildren.
