Red Cross Facing "Emergency Blood Shortages"
The Red Cross said hospitals face a gap of more than 26,000 donations as summer drives fade and demand stays high.
On Monday, The American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage after the national blood supply fell nearly 25% in June.
The shortage coincides with the "summer trauma season," spanning Memorial Day to Labor Day, when demand for trauma care increases while donations decline.
Dr. Courtney Lawrence, division chief medical officer for The Red Cross, said distributions to hospitals are nearly 3,500 units higher per week than expected.
The Red Cross is especially seeking type O positive and B negative blood and AB plasma, offering Fandango Movie Tickets to donors through July 31.
A recent survey by The Red Cross revealed a "significant gap" between public perception and reality; less than 1 in 5 respondents understood blood cannot be stockpiled.
The American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage after a drop of almost 25% in its national reserve during June, so you can donate to the DMV this week.
