'Record high' lava fountains seen at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano in latest eruption
Episode 35 produced simultaneous lava fountains exceeding 460 meters from two vents, with lava flows confined to the summit crater, officials said.
- Kīlauea's episode 35 began at 20:05 HST on October 17, producing simultaneous north and south fountains at Halemaʻumaʻu summit crater reaching about 460 m, HVO reported.
- Continuous tremor and summit inflation indicate magma was present at shallow levels beneath both vents, while Uwekahuna tiltmeter measured 23 microradians of inflation before 19:28 HST precursory activity.
- By 21:30 HST, observations showed the south vent reached 400 m and the north vent about 330 m, while the eruption cloud rose over 5 000 m and extended to roughly 6 000 m.
- Park officials warned lava flows remained confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater, but Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park kept restricted summit access due to crater-wall instability and elevated sulfur dioxide emissions causing vog.
- HVO scientists note that the ongoing eruption sequence, active since December 23, 2024, proceeds as short, intense episodes separated by pauses, resembling the 1983–86 Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption pattern as of October 18.
