Rare glossy ibis visitor spotted in part of Scotland for first time

Glossy Ibis sightings have surged in Scotland with first-ever records in Renfrewshire and multiple nature reserves, attributed partly to milder winters, RSPB Scotland said.

  • On Saturday October 18, a Glossy Ibis was seen at RSPB Lochwinnoch nature reserve, marking the first-ever record for Renfrewshire, said Dan Snowdon, warden, who called it `our second such first of the year after a pair of avocets visited our wetland scrape in the spring`.
  • On October 9, RSPB Scotland reported seven Glossy Ibis at Baron's Haugh nature reserve, Motherwell, and another later this month at Loch Gruinart, marking a rare influx this year.
  • The species first bred successfully in the UK in Cambridgeshire in 2022 and has not been known to nest in Scotland, while the Glossy Ibis is slightly larger than a Curlew with iridescent feathers.
  • Reserve staff said the sighting excited birdwatchers, and experts said time will tell if the glossy ibis becomes established after recent England breeding records.
  • Milder winters, which experts link to climate change, may explain the species' more frequent appearances in Scotland, while increases in southern and western Europe push the range expansion, RSPB Scotland said.
