American shot at by Alberta RCMP had entered Canada illegally: ASIRT
ASIRT said the officer used reasonable force after the suspect led police on a chase that reached 140 km/h and ended with a self-inflicted fatal shot.
- On Wednesday, The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team ruled an RCMP officer's use of force during a February 2025 pursuit in Coutts, Alberta, was reasonable, warranting no criminal charges.
- The incident began Feb. 4, 2025, when the American suspect fled a border security screening at Coutts, triggering a high-speed pursuit reaching 150 km/h with dangerous driving maneuvers on Alberta highways.
- An autopsy determined the individual died by self-inflicted gunshot, not the officer's weapon, while toxicology reports showed he had ingested alcohol, cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, and LSD prior to death.
- Acting executive director Matthew Block stated officers "need not wait to see if the person will shoot before acting," citing the individual's documented paranoid-schizophrenia-like behaviour and delusions.
- After the suspect's vehicle entered a ditch at 9:38 a.m., he fled on foot while ignoring police commands to "get on the ground," shooting himself as a police service dog engaged his arm.
