Rare Sea Snails Spotted Along San Diego Beaches
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST, JUL 23 – Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography found Janthina snails for the first time in a decade, linked to warmer waters washing them ashore, researchers said.
- Recently, shimmering purple shells of janthina sea snails washed ashore in San Diego, and Anya Stajner found a specimen on La Jolla Shores.
- A spokesperson for Scripps Institution of Oceanography linked the strandings to warmer offshore waters, as janthina sea snails use bubble-like rafts to stay afloat in sub-tropical to tropical seas.
- Anya Stajner urged beachgoers to photograph any Janthina sightings and send them to Scripps, noting La Jolla Shores is a designated no-take area.
- Looking ahead, Anya Stajner said researchers will investigate links to climate change, adding `I think it's something that we will be on the lookout for`.

Scientists believe warmer off-shore waters are behind these snails’ sudden appearance on California shores…
