A dormitory in Amsterdam is intended to promote the coexistence of asylum seekers and local students – instead, it becomes the scene of rape, further sexual assaults and knife violence. Nevertheless, the community excludes an early end to the project.
It was supposed to be a demonstration project of integration. However, according to students' testimonies, living together with refugees in the Stek Oost complex in Amsterdam turned into an environment full of fear, sexual assault and violence, which the authorities ignored for a long time.
The Stek Oost housing complex was launched in 2018 and its goal was to provide a solution to the housing shortage, and to "assimilate" asylum seekers into Dutch culture. In practice, the complex became a nightmare for locals, with dozens of cases of rape and physical violence.
