Carter Baumler Told He Made Rangers Big League Roster While on Mound
- On Monday, Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker informed rookie Carter Baumler he made the opening day roster during a fifth-inning mound visit at Globe Life Field against the Kansas City Royals.
- Acquired by the Texas Rangers via trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December, Baumler must remain in the major leagues all season or be offered back to the Baltimore Orioles.
- After learning he made the team, Baumler struck out Isaac Collins on a 96.8 mph fastball to finish the inning; in eight spring training games, the rookie allowed one earned run and struck out 10 over 9 1/3 innings.
- The decision to include Baumler means pitchers Luis Curvelo and Josh Sborz will begin the season in the minors, with Sborz on a minor league contract remaining a depth option.
- Reflecting on his journey from Iowa, Baumler said, "I'm glad I kept my head down and kept hammering away." The rookie looks to make his major league debut after never pitching above Double-A.
