Afghanistan-Backed Plot Behind Karachi Rangers Attack: Pakistan
Officials said the attackers were trained and directed from Afghanistan, and three security personnel were killed in the assault, according to the Pakistan Army.
- On Tuesday, police said the deadly attack on a Karachi Rangers camp last month had "backing from Afghanistan," where the terrorists were trained. Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar stated investigations concluded the planning occurred on Afghan soil.
- Senior Superintendent of Police Irfan Bahadur detailed the "four phases" of the operation, including planning in Afghanistan, moving terrorists into Pakistan, arranging local support, and supplying weapons. Handlers directed the attack "till the last stage from Afghanistan."
- Investigators arrested Qari Bashir, the alleged "mastermind behind the attack on a Karachi Rangers camp," who confessed during interrogation. Law enforcement agencies "discovered a network of facilitators involved in the attack through a comprehensive effort."
- Officials identified the militants as members of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, with three attackers being Afghan nationals. The fourth suspect, Usman Sher Mohammad, had lived in Afghanistan for around 20 years before the June 27 assault.
- Pakistan continues to accuse the Taliban government of providing safe havens as regional tensions remain strained. Sindh has seen seven terrorist incidents this year, compared with 37 during the same period last year.
