Rally traffic counts down from 5-year average
State troopers handled 54 crashes in six days, down more than 37% from last year, as rally traffic fell 7.8%, officials said.
- Traffic at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has fallen 7.8% this year, with more than 318,000 motorists recorded over six days. The South Dakota Highway Patrol reports crashes are down more than 37% compared to last year.
- Statistics are compiled through the 10-day Rally Tally, which tracks only state-investigated incidents. The Sturgis Police Department, which has jurisdiction within city limits, reported a 2% decrease in service calls through Wednesday.
- Troopers responded to 54 crashes over six days, including three fatal incidents, 32 injury crashes, and 19 non-injury reports. Of the injury cases, 13 occurred inside Sturgis while 19 happened across the Black Hills region.
- On Thursday, Aug. 13, troopers investigated a Freightliner crash involving motorcycles near Iron Horse Campground in Sturgis. Single-bike incidents also occurred in Deadwood, Rapid City, and Custer State Park, resulting in various injuries.
- Throughout the 10-day event, authorities continue releasing daily updates as troopers maintain a presence across the Black Hills. The rally runs through Sunday, Aug. 16.
