Four State Wildlife Areas Closed as Lee and Elk Fires Continue to Burn, Threatening Homes in Rio Blanco County
RIO BLANCO COUNTY, COLORADO, AUG 6 – Governor Polis declared a disaster emergency to mobilize resources against the Elk and Lee fires, which have burned over 30,000 acres and remain 0% contained, officials said.
- Amid rapid fire growth, officials ordered evacuations as the Elk Fire and Lee Fire grew to over 30,000 acres with 0% containment.
- A Red Flag Warning covered Rio Blanco County as lightning sparked the Elk Fire and Lee Fire, fueled by hot, windy weather and dry vegetation.
- Fire managers report over 290 personnel, including six hand crews, 30 fire engines, a dozer, and more than 200 personnel with seven aircraft, supported by Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team Three.
- At around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, zones 50, 51 and 54 received Go evacuation orders, and the Walbridge Wing of the Pioneers Medical Center began evacuations around 4 p.m., while Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds provides livestock shelter.
