'Bad News' for Drivers Ahead of Bank Holiday as Petrol Prices Rise Again
The RAC said motorists have paid an extra £2.9 billion since Middle East tensions began, and petrol could soon reach 160p a litre.
UK petrol prices reached 158.5p per litre, marking their highest level since December 2022, according to the RAC.
Conflict in the Middle East on February 28 triggered the initial surge, with global oil prices remaining above $100 USD a barrel since late April, sustaining upward pressure.
The RAC Foundation estimates rising fuel costs have added around £2.9 billion to motorists' bills, while RAC analysis indicates unleaded could hit at least 160p per litre in coming weeks.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to abandon plans to increase fuel duty later this week, as ministers face pressure to avoid adding further costs for drivers.
Samuel Mather-Holgate, Managing Director & IFA at Mather and Murray Financial, warns drivers are already seeing £2 per litre at some stations, with costs likely escalating further in coming weeks.
