Quilpituk Creek fire showed less-than-expected growth Friday
Crews kept the blaze mostly within contingency lines as evacuation orders and alerts remained in place for 2,969 properties, officials said.
- The out-of-control Quilpituk Creek wildfire is estimated at 1,238 hectares, according to the BC Wildfire Service update issued on Sunday morning.
- Evacuation orders remain in place for 2,648 properties, with alerts affecting another 321 properties, as Westside Road stays closed to the public north of the 4400-block.
- To combat the blaze, the BCWS has committed over 120 firefighters, 11 helicopters, 40 pieces of heavy equipment, and 67 structure protection units to the Quilpituk and Bradley Creek fires.
- BC Wildfire Service Fire Information Officer Morgan Blois reported crews contained fire growth within contingency lines despite hot, dry conditions that could increase activity.
- If weather permits, the BCWS plans a controlled ignition operation on the west flank on Sunday to remove around 100 hectares of potential fuel between fire lines.
