Qualcomm’s New Snapdragon Chips Unlock AI Cameras, 90FPS Gaming, and Faster Connectivity for Budget Phones
Qualcomm says the chips cut lag, speed app launches and reduce screen stutter, with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 GPU rated 77% faster.
- Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 as its latest mid-range chipsets, both built on a 4nm process to bring flagship-level capabilities to affordable smartphones.
- Chenwei Yan, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm, said the goal was to strike "the right balance of performance, power efficiency and connectivity" to solve persistent lag spikes in mid-range Android phones.
- Both chips introduce "Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI" for lag-free navigation and feature a 77% improvement in GPU performance, with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 adding nearly 2 hours of additional music streaming.
- Xiaomi, Honor, OPPO, and realme are expected to announce new devices powered by these chipsets in the second half of 2026, with the 4-series debuting in overseas devices from Oppo, realme, and REDMI.
- CEO Cristiano Amon stated "leading hyperscaler custom silicon engagement is on track for initial shipments later this calendar year," as Qualcomm prepares to detail data center and physical AI roadmaps at the June 24 Investor Day.
