Qualcomm announces tape-out stage of 2nm semiconductor design in Bengaluru

Qualcomm's India engineering teams reached a key design milestone for 2nm chips, supporting India's push to become a global semiconductor design hub, officials said.

  • Saturday, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced the tape-out of a 2nm semiconductor design in Bengaluru, co-developed in India and driven by its largest engineering team outside the U.S.
  • The government allocated Rs 1,000 crore for ISM 2.0, with Vaishnaw emphasizing indigenous chip design and talent development, saying 'In Semicon 2.0, the topmost priority will be design companies.'
  • Qualcomm noted the tape-out phase is one of the last stages in semiconductor design before manufacturing and highlighted over 20 years of investment and its engineering development centres in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.
  • The announcement positions India as a critical hub for semiconductor development and aligns with the government’s long-term goal of producing chips at the 2-nanometre node, Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
  • Funding will focus on industry-led research initiatives and training centres, while talent development is a major ISM 2.0 pillar with a strong pipeline already created.
