Qatar will soon announce local defence production hub, minister of state says
The new initiative aims to build capacity in missiles, drones and cyber defense as regional military spending reached $218 billion, officials said.
On Monday, Qatar Defence Minister Sheikh Saoud announced at the Global Security Forum in Doha that the nation will soon establish a new defence production hub to strengthen domestic military capabilities.
Following significant damage to Ras Laffan Industrial City during The Iran war, Qatar is reconsidering its historical reliance on foreign security guarantees and external procurement to protect energy infrastructure.
Sheikh Saoud stated Qatar is partnering with regional allies and the United States, the United Kingdom, and France "to make sure either we do local protection or we are investing in some of these companies."
Building indigenous capacity against ballistic missiles, drones, and cyberattacks marks a strategic pivot for Qatar, which historically relied on foreign security guarantees rather than developing domestic defence production.
Regional powers like the UAE and Saudi Arabia are investing in domestic defence industries through entities such as the Edge Group and Saudi Arabian Military Industries, establishing a broader Middle East trend.
