Two transgender MSPs elected to Holyrood in first for Scottish parliament
The Scottish Greens won two regional seats as online attacks questioned Manivannan’s eligibility under visa rules.
On Friday, Q Manivannan and Iris Duane were elected as the first two transgender MSPs in Holyrood history, representing Edinburgh and Lothians East and Glasgow respectively.
Despite online abuse questioning Manivannan's eligibility, the Scottish Greens confirmed the candidate is a Commonwealth citizen on a valid visa with the right to live and work in Scotland.
The Scottish Parliament passed the Scottish Elections Act in 2020, allowing anyone with the legal right to reside in the UK to stand as a candidate.
Celebrating the victory at the Royal Highland Centre, Manivannan declared, "This is what diversity looks like in power," positioning their election as expanding political care for marginalized groups.
The Scottish Greens also secured a historic election result, with party co-leader Patrick Harvie returning to Holyrood alongside newly elected candidates Kate Nevens and Kayleigh Ferguson Kinross-O'Neill.
