Wrist Injury Forces Tennis Star Alcaraz to Pull Out of Wimbledon
Alcaraz said he needs a full recovery to protect a long career after the wrist injury forced him out of two Grand Slam tournaments.
Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury. The 23-year-old Spaniard, part of the Sincaraz rivalry with Jannik Sinner, announced his decision while wearing a brace to prioritize his long-term career.
During his match against Finland's Otto Virtanen in Barcelona, Alcaraz sustained the injury. Though he initially attempted to continue, the severity of the wrist condition forced him to withdraw before his second-round match.
With Alcaraz sidelined, Sinner enters the French Open on a 29-match winning streak. The Italian recently became the youngest man to achieve the Career Golden Masters in Rome and now has a huge chance of completing the Career Grand Slam.
Historical precedents like Juan Martin del Potro and Dominic Thiem illustrate the career-altering risks of wrist injuries. Del Potro won the US Open as a 20-year-old but never captured another Major; Thiem similarly never regained form after his 2021 wrist injury.
Speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards, Alcaraz emphasized the necessity of patience. "I'd rather come back a little later and with a full recovery," he said, citing his desire to protect his future on the professional tennis circuit.
The French Open takes place without Carlos Alcaraz. On the title of the new »Vanity Fair«, the tennis player still shows who the real king is on the sand courts.
