Psychiatrist more sure of schizophrenia in man accused of killing B.C. RCMP officer
Mandeep Saini told a B.C. Review Board hearing that seven weeks of low-dose antipsychotic medication has not yet changed Jongwon Ham’s delusions.
- On Tuesday, forensic psychiatrist Mandeep Saini testified before the B.C. Review Board that Jongwon Ham likely suffers from schizophrenia, updating his previous clinical assessment from a delusional disorder diagnosis.
- Justice Michael Tammen previously declared Ham unfit for trial in April, ruling he was "clearly overwhelmed by delusional thinking" that prevented rational decision-making during proceedings.
- Saini noted some "softening" of Ham's beliefs but cautioned that seven weeks of low-dose antipsychotic medication since May 25 is likely insufficient to alter his deeply held delusions.
- Social worker Derrick Carew testified at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital that Ham remained "co-operative" during their recent meetings, providing behavioral context to the psychiatric assessment.
- The Review Board continues assessing whether Ham can understand the first-degree murder charge and participate in his defense, following the postponement of his trial originally scheduled for January.
