PSNI Chief Constable Warns Against ‘Wild Speculation’ About Jeffrey Donaldson
Jon Boutcher said social media posts are under investigation as he warned that speculation could undermine victim anonymity in the Donaldson case.
On Thursday, PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher warned against "wild speculation" regarding the Jeffrey Donaldson case, emphasizing respect for ongoing legal processes. The 63-year-old former DUP leader remains in custody awaiting sentencing for 18 sexual offences.
Victims are "finding the current media frenzy and wild speculation incredibly difficult to handle," Boutcher said, urging the public and media to respect the ongoing criminal justice process. This marks a distinct actor-first opening varying from Bullet 1.
Reminding everyone that publicly identifying a victim is a criminal offence, Boutcher said "great attention must be taken" to protect complainant anonymity. Victims do not wish to speak with media.
Police are actively investigating social media posts related to the trial, while Boutcher dismissed claims of "no surveillance" or "blackmail against him by the government." This addresses immediate consequences of ongoing legal proceedings.
Allegations against Donaldson first reached the PSNI in 2024, with his arrest occurring three weeks later. Boutcher maintained that commentary must recognize the integrity of the criminal justice process, particularly given ongoing proceedings and appeal possibilities.
