Governments Pour Millions Into Okanagan Flood Protection, Safeguarding Vernon Treatment Plant

The province has invested more than $16 million since 2017 to protect wastewater, irrigation and other critical infrastructure from flooding.

  • Kelly Greene, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, visited Vernon on Tuesday to mark completion of the 43rd Street crossing upgrade on Vernon Creek, which now protects the city's wastewater treatment plant from recurring floods.
  • Since 2017, the Province has dedicated more than $16 million to flood-hazard projects across Vernon, Lumby, and Penticton. The Vernon Creek project itself was funded through the Green Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
  • The upgrades included channel widening, stabilizing embankments, and protecting fish habitats. Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said, "The improvements to Vernon Creek strengthen our resilience to extreme weather," while safeguarding critical infrastructure.
  • Construction will begin this summer in Lumby on two setback dike projects along Duteau Creek and Bessette Creek, providing nearly one kilometre of flood protection in areas prone to flooding.
  • Penticton also upgraded The Ellis 4 Dam to meet provincial safety regulations, with the City contributing $11.9 million to help control water flow into Ellis Creek and support irrigation and aquatic life.
