B.C. Funds $2.7M for Northern Businesses and First Nations Groups
Two programs will offer grants of up to $200,000 for equipment, technology and capital projects to help northern businesses expand and diversify.
- On Friday, August 28, 2026, B.C. Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Sheila Malcolmson announced $2.7 million in new funding in Prince Rupert to support Northern businesses and First Nations development corporations.
- Administered by the Northern Development Initiative Trust, the funding operates under Phase 2 of the Province's Rural and Remote Employment Initiatives Fund to help local employers navigate difficult economic conditions.
- Allocations include $1.8 million for small and medium-sized businesses through the Business Diversification and Sustainability program, while $900,000 supports First Nations development corporations with grants up to $200,000 covering 75 per cent of eligible costs.
- North Coast-Haida Gwaii MLA Tamara Davidson stated the funding supports regional communities, while Cody Anaka, executive director of the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce, noted it helps employers "navigate these difficult times."
- Interested applicants can begin applying on September 2, 2026, with the Business Diversification and Sustainability program accepting submissions until October 15, and the First Nations Business Development Capacity Building program open until June 30, 2027.
