Irish Leaders Condemn Israel's Detention of President's Sister
Irish leaders called the detentions illegal and said they will press the issue at European Union level as 12 citizens remain held.
On Monday, Israeli forces intercepted 10 boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, detaining Irish citizens including Margaret Connolly, sister of President Catherine Connolly.
Ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla departed Turkey on Thursday for a third attempt to deliver aid to Gaza, aiming to challenge the siege while upholding international law.
Human rights campaigner Caoimhe Butterly expressed concern regarding detainee safety following reports of past violence, while President Connolly stated she is "very proud" of her sister but remains "very worried."
Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemned the detention as "unacceptable," while Minister Helen McEntee is advocating for a vote at the June 15th European Council meeting on Ireland's Occupied Territories Bill.
The Irish Government plans to raise the detentions at European Union level, seeking consensus on sanctions; Minister McEntee emphasized that if a European-wide response fails, it strengthens the case for independent national legislation.
