Prosecutors allege gang members tried to kill Indiana judge to derail domestic abuse trial
Five suspects linked to Phantom MC and Vice Lords face charges after a shooting that injured a judge and his wife to obstruct a domestic abuse trial, prosecutors said.
- Prosecutors alleged Friday that Phantom MC and the Vice Lords plotted to kill Tippecanoe County Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer at his Lafayette home, injuring him and Kimberly Meyer, and five people across three states were arrested.
- Thomas Gregory Moss, 43, was due to stand trial Jan. 20, and prosecutors say his associates offered his ex-girlfriend $10K to avoid testifying, which she refused.
- Forensic evidence, including DNA on a mask, and surveillance footage, including restaurant video, linked Raylen Ferguson, 38, to the plot, with clothing and a shotgun traced to a Jan. 5 purchase.
- Prosecutors allege Moss, Ferguson, and Smith face attempted murder, conspiracy, battery, and intimidation; Milsap faces bribery and obstruction counts, with some defendants facing sentence-enhancing allegations.
- Threats to judges have increased, with Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush noting over 150 of 214 judges reported threats in 2023, while threat counts rose from 74 in 2022 to 232 in 2023.
