Progressive group calls for Senate Dems to replace Schumer as leader

Flanagan says Democrats need a new generation of Senate leaders after at least 10 new Democratic senators won seats in the midterms, according to results.

  • On Wednesday, Sen.-elect Peggy Flanagan called for new Senate Democratic leadership, breaking with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer despite praising his electoral victories. Flanagan argued the party must reject corporate PAC funding to serve voters.
  • Flanagan rode a blue wave to victory alongside progressives Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, Juliana Stratton of Illinois, and Troy Jackson of Maine. These newly-elected senators seek sweeping economic proposals including universal childcare and raising the federal minimum wage.
  • Moderate Sen. Elise Slotkin of Michigan also called for a "new generation" of leaders to succeed Schumer, who has served since 1999. The Democratic caucus holds its leadership election in December before the new Congress convenes in January.
  • Despite calls for change, most Democratic senators remain loyal to Schumer, and as of Wednesday he faces no formal challenger. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is credited with helping the party flip at least seven Republican seats.
  • Sen. Chris Van Hollen warned that "no one should be committing to anybody" without debating a bold agenda. Progressives aim to advance economic priorities like raising the federal minimum wage, requiring Republican support to overcome the Senate filibuster.
