Family selling 'idyllic' island with ruined castle after 80 years
SHUNA ISLAND, SCOTLAND, JUN 22 – Shuna Island features a ruined 20th-century castle, six holiday homes, and sustainable energy infrastructure, with Sotheby's calling it a rare heritage offering at £5.5 million.
Shuna Island, a 1,110-acre private Scottish island with a ruined 20th-century castle and eight residential properties, has gone on sale for £5.5 million.
The Gully family has owned and managed Shuna since 1945, maintaining its working farm, holiday homes, and country sports like deer stalking, with recent decisions prompted by management changes.
The island features archaeological sites including Stone Age burial mounds and a rare sword discovery in 1875, plus a private pier, helipad, renewable energy system, and accommodates up to 52 people.
Owner Jim Gully described the sale as "a huge part for all of our lives" ending, expressing it is "sad" but also a relief since his father visited the island several times weekly.
Estate agents Sotheby's International Realty and Knight Frank promote the sale as a rare opportunity ideal for boutique hospitality, retreats, or a regenerative tourism venture off the beaten path.
