Princess of Wales Makes Surprise Visit to Southend Today

On Thursday, the Princess of Wales visited the Forward Growing initiative at Garon Park in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, to support people recovering from addiction. As patron of The Forward Trust, she toured the community garden project.
Addiction Awareness Week, which began Saturday and runs through Friday, prompted the visit. The Forward Trust organizes the annual campaign to encourage people in recovery to engage with nature and gardening as therapeutic tools.
During the tour, conservation lead Liam King discussed the plants with the Princess. She described the planting area as a "fantastic space," observing how service users use gardening to support their recovery.
When asked about her own gardening, the Princess admitted, "A little bit." She praised Prince William's expertise, saying, "I should have my husband here, he knows a lot about gardening, he's really passionate."
Ahead of this week, the Princess called for an end to the "stigma" surrounding addiction. She urged society to show "compassion and love" to those affected, emphasizing addiction as a complex health condition.
