Prince William’s vow to save pubs from disappearing as he’s praised for breaking period stigma
William urged protection for pubs and backed a Southwark foodbank after a burglary stole stock, with several thousand pounds donated to restock shelves.
On Wednesday, the Prince of Wales William visited the Prince of Peckham in south London, pulling a pint of Red Stripe and calling for greater protection of British pubs as vital community spaces.
Clement Ogbonnaya established the Peckham Pub in 2017 as an inclusive "public house for all," designed to serve as a community hub. William noted that public houses remain underused spaces with significant potential for community engagement across London.
The Prince also toured the Pecan charity in the London Borough of Southwark, packing groceries with volunteer Evelyn Oakley and praising the "Chatty Patty" programme for bringing the community together.
Following a 2024 burglary at the Pecan warehouse, the Prince donated several thousand pounds to replenish foodbank stock, telling trustees he "tried to work out how we could help."
Ogbonnaya hopes to expand the "Chatty Patty" programme beyond Peckham to address isolation among disenfranchised young Britons, leveraging the momentum from the royal visit to scale community impact across London.
