Prince of Wales attends 125th anniversary of naval base’s submarine service
William met submariners, families and top Royal Navy officials as he marked 125 years of the service and toured a Vanguard Class vessel.
- On Tuesday, Prince William visited HM Naval Base Clyde in Faslane to mark the 125th anniversary of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, touring a Vanguard Class submarine and meeting personnel from diverse backgrounds.
- The Submarine Service began in 1901 with the arrival of HMS Holland 1 under Captain Reginald Bacon, and today maintains the UK's nuclear deterrent using four Trident vessels.
- William presented The Gold Submariner's Dolphin to qualified trainees and later met families at the Drumfork Community Centre in Helensburgh, including those of personnel returned from the longest nuclear-armed patrol.
- On Wednesday, a Royal Navy helicopter crashed into a field in Devon, killing Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, and Petty Officer Owen Green near Okehampton just before 4am.
- King Charles said he was "profoundly shocked" by the incident on Friday, while The Princess of Wales posted that she was "saddened" to hear of the deaths, noting the service was "held in the highest regard.
