On 26 October 2006, a Chinese Song-class diesel-electric attack submarine surfaced within five miles of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk near Okinawa. A US aircraft spotted the boat only after it had surfaced. Had the two countries been at war, the carrier would have been hit before the Navy knew the submarine was there.
