On 26 October 2006 a 2,200-ton Chinese Song-class diesel submarine surfaced about five miles from USS Kitty Hawk in the East China Sea, inside torpedo range and undetected until it broke the surface. Roughly a dozen warships were screening the carrier. Fifteen years later the Navy sold the 80,000-ton ship to a Texas breaker for one cent.
