- On Jan. 2, the U.S. Justice Department said it thwarted an alleged ISIS-inspired attack planned for New Year's Eve and detained Christian Sturdivant on that day.
- In 2022, the FBI first flagged Christian Sturdivant after contact with an unidentified ISIS member overseas, and court records show he planned for about a year, communicating in December with undercover agents from the FBI and NYPD.
- FBI agents searching his home found a handwritten note 'New Years Attack 2026' and seized two hammers, two knives, and photos of these items shared online.
- At his Friday court appearance, officials said Christian Sturdivant is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, faces a statutory maximum of 20 years, and remains in federal custody pending a hearing on Jan. 7.
- After roughly 14 days of investigation, the Joint Terrorism Task Force and partner agencies including the NYPD and local police stopped a potential national tragedy, with U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson saying, `He was preparing for jihad and innocent people were going to die`.
